"Lack of language does not equal lack of knowledge"
As a former ELL myself, I am committed to creating a space for translanguaging in the classroom where students are able to and are encouraged to use their full linguistic repertoire to express themselves and to understand the world around them. Below are some strategies I have used in the classroom to promote the use of a students' home language to foster linguistic development and content and conceptual understanding
Home Language Vocabulary Sort
This chart prompts students to match a picture to a familiar word/phrase, then to a "stretch word" which is their target vocabulary, and then to the home language definition. This aids the students' understanding of vocabulary with the use of visuals, shades of meaning of words, and home language support.
